Breakbeat is a genre of electronic music built on syncopated drum patterns: the "break", originally sampled from funk, soul, and jazz records. Where mainstream electronic music locks into a rigid four-on-the-floor kick pattern, Breakbeat lives in the space between the beats: the snare hits, the ghost notes, the off-kilter rhythms that make a body move differently.

Within the Breakbeat umbrella sit several distinct sub-genres. Electro Breaks fuses the mechanical precision of electro with the organic swing of breakbeats, harder, faster, and more aggressive than its cousins. Electro Bass pushes the low end to the front, building tracks around sub-bass frequencies that hit physically. Nu Skool Breaks brought the genre into the 2000s with darker production and heavier sound design.
